Penang is running more than twenty startup events between 1 and 30 November 2026, under a programme called PENtastic Startup Month. Digital Penang coordinates it. The sessions themselves are organised independently by other organisations, which is the detail that makes the programme worth understanding rather than just attending.
The structure is unusual for Malaysia. Rather than one venue hosting one conference, the month is a distributed calendar. A regulator runs a five-day telecoms masterclass. A university runs a pitching session. A women’s business association runs an expo. A coding community runs a gaming tournament. Big Domain runs a three-hour AI workshop on 30 November. Digital Penang’s role is coordination, promotion and the calendar, not programming.
That has a practical consequence for anyone trying to use the month well. There is no single ticket that gets you in. Each event has its own registration, its own price and often its own audience. You pick.
What PENtastic Startup Month actually is
Digital Penang describes it as the northern region’s largest startup celebration, connecting founders, investors, corporates, universities and ecosystem builders across a month of events. The published programme carries more than 20 events, more than 20 speakers and more than 20 partners.
The framing matters. This is not an accelerator cohort and there is no selection process. The programme is a container. Digital Penang states plainly that the activities are organised independently by ecosystem builders, and the disclaimer is explicit that programme details, schedules, venues, speakers and partners are subject to change without notice, and that views expressed by speakers do not represent Digital Penang.
Read that as an invitation and a warning. The calendar is broad and genuinely useful. It is also not a single vetted product, so the quality varies by organiser, and you should confirm details with whoever is running the session you want.

The sessions worth clearing a morning for
Twenty-odd events is too many to attend. These are the ones that stood out when we read the calendar, chosen for who is running them rather than for the topic being fashionable.
| Session | Date and venue | Organiser | Why it is on this list |
|---|---|---|---|
| CTPR Masterclass 2026 | 2–6 Nov, Courtyard by Marriott Penang | MCMC with MMU and GSMA | A five-day regulator-led programme on digital policy and connectivity across ASEAN. Rare access to the people who set the rules. |
| AI Startups and Urban Resilience | 5 Nov, Digital Penang | MIT Asia Real Estate Initiative | Closed-door focus group with MIT and USC urban economists. Invitation only, so this is a note rather than an option. |
| AI Business Tools: Startup Glow-Up | 11 Nov, Digital Penang | WOU School of Digital Technology | Builds a Business Model Canvas with an AI profiler and sends you home with a business profile. |
| Penang Green Summit 2026 | 12–13 Nov, Penang Waterfront Convention Centre | Penang Green Council | Conference plus exhibition on AI and sustainability. The largest physical event in the programme. |
| PitchPenang 2026 | 14 Nov, USM | RentMate Kampus | Podcast-format pitching session with founders and investors, plus an open Q&A. Useful if you are raising. |
| AI for SME Growth | 18 Nov, Auditorium@Exabytes Penang | Exabytes | A hosting company explaining AI to SMEs. Worth attending to compare the pitch against your own vendor quotes. |
| Fractional C-suite Workshop 2 | 19 Nov, Digital Penang | Kinetik Hiring | Hiring without permanent executives. Practical for a company that needs senior judgement but not a senior salary. |
| HERTRADE Expo 2026 | 21 Nov, Loft 29 | Penang Elite Womenpreneurs Association | Free entry, walk-in. Brand exhibitions and networking, held with the association’s fourth anniversary. |
| Founders & Funders | 26 Nov, Harris Hotel & Convention Sunshine Penang | Entrepreneur Growth Hub, Exabytes, Rakan Sales | Founders and investors in one room with a networking dinner. Runs to 9pm. |
| Agentic AI Workshop Penang | 30 Nov, Digital Penang | Big Domain | Three hours of hands-on build: WorkBuddy demonstrated live, then a marketing video made end to end. RM50 early bird. |
Selected sessions from the published PENtastic Startup Month 2026 calendar, read 4 November 2026. Times, venues and registration are per organiser; the programme states these may change without notice.
Three patterns in the calendar
The programme is heavily AI-weighted, but at different depths. There are at least eight AI-titled sessions. They range from a beginner training on ChatGPT and Claude, through workshops on getting AI platforms to recommend your business, to a session on how ecosystems can run 24/7 on AI-powered support. Attending three of these will teach you roughly the same thing three times. Attending one introductory and one build session will not.
The money and compliance sessions are the quiet value. A startup tax workshop, a two-day financial clarity bootcamp, a design thinking course that is HRD Corp claimable. These are less exciting than the AI sessions and considerably more likely to change your month. The tax session in particular addresses an obligation that most first-time founders discover late.
The organisers are mostly commercial, and that is fine as long as you know. Exabytes is a hosting company. Kinetik Hiring sells hiring services. Big Domain sells AI, hosting and SEO. Digital Penang is a state agency. Nobody is neutral here, including us. The useful question at any of these sessions is not “is this vendor credible” but “what does this vendor know that I cannot get from their website”.
Where Big Domain fits, and why we are running on the last day
Big Domain’s session is Agentic AI Workshop Penang, on Monday 30 November from 2pm to 5pm at Digital Penang on Pengkalan Weld. Digital Penang lists it under the title AI for Business Content and Video with WonderClip and Wan 3.0.
The content is narrow on purpose. Dr Henry Tye runs WorkBuddy live for an hour, on real files, so the room sees an agent plan a task, execute it and hand back a finished deliverable. Wong You Huat of Suria AI takes the content and video half, using the workflow his team ships commercially rather than a feature demonstration. The rest is hands-on.
We chose the closing date deliberately. By 30 November, an attendee who has been to two or three other sessions in the programme will have a pile of ideas and no working system. The last day is the right place to convert that into one automation and one published video. There is a full breakdown of the agenda, the venue and the ticket tiers in our event page for the 30 November session.

How to get value out of a distributed festival
- Pick two sessions, not eight. The calendar is a menu. Attending everything produces notes and no change. Choose one session that teaches a skill and one that solves a specific problem you already have.
- Register per event, early. There is no central pass. Several sessions are explicitly limited — the Big Timer simulation is capped at 30 participants, and the Big Domain workshop states that seats are limited.
- Check the venue on the day. The programme disclaimer says venues and times may change without notice. Two sessions on this calendar still list a venue as to be confirmed.
- Bring a specific problem. The hands-on sessions reward preparation. A generic question gets a generic answer at every one of them.
- Ignore the ones you are not the audience for. A closed-door MIT focus group is not open. A student game jam is for teenagers. Reading the eligibility line saves a wasted morning.

One gap worth naming. Every session except our own is described from Digital Penang’s published calendar; we did not confirm any of them with the individual organiser.
BD Media is the editorial desk of Big Domain, which runs one session in this programme. That relationship is disclosed above. Sessions by other organisers are described from Digital Penang’s published calendar, not from attendance.
