A free, practical cybersecurity workshop for SME leaders is coming to Juru, Penang, on Tuesday 22 September 2026. It runs from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Cafe Amazon Auto City, costs nothing to attend, and is capped on seats.
The session is built around a blunt premise: most Malaysian SMEs are not targeted because they are valuable, but because they are easy. Small businesses run the same customer data, the same bank access and the same supplier relationships as larger firms, with none of the same defences — and that gap is what gets exploited.
Why this is landing in Penang now
Penang’s SME base is unusually exposed. The state’s manufacturers and their surrounding supply chains have spent the last two years wiring ordering, invoicing and customer service into online systems — often quickly, often without a security review. Every one of those integrations is a door.
The same pressure has arrived from the other direction. The Online Safety Act 2025, which came into force in January 2026, holds digital platforms accountable for content and safety on their systems. For a business owner, the practical takeaway is narrower but just as uncomfortable: the legal and reputational consequences of a breach now land faster, and the expectation that reasonable steps were taken is no longer optional.
What the workshop actually covers
The organisers have set out three things the session is designed to deliver, and they are deliberately ordered from awareness to action:
- Know the threat. What is actually hitting SMEs in Malaysia right now — not theoretical attack vectors, but the phishing, invoice fraud and credential-stuffing patterns that account for the majority of losses.
- Know your risk. Where the weak points in a typical SME setup are, and how to find them in your own business without hiring a consultant.
- Know what to do. The practical steps to take before, during and after an attack — including how to recover faster when something has already gone wrong.
That third point is the one most SME owners are least prepared for. Recovery is where the cost is decided: an incident that is contained in a day is a bad week, while the same incident discovered three weeks later can mean lost customers, a ransomware demand and weeks of disrupted trading.

Who is behind it
The session is presented by CyberSure, SAMENTA (Northern Region) and State Insurance Brokers, and hosted through the SAMENTA and BD Events channels on Eventsize.
SAMENTA is Malaysia’s oldest SME association, established in 1986, and has run a series of digital and AI-focused programmes for members across the country through 2025 and 2026. Bringing an insurance broker into a cybersecurity session is not incidental — it reflects where the conversation usually ends up, which is who pays when an incident happens and whether the business was compliant with its own cover conditions.
Cafe Amazon Auto City is the Juru venue, just off the North-South Expressway interchange, which makes the session reachable for businesses across Seberang Perai as well as the island.
