ChatGPT Shopping is live: users can find and, in the United States, buy products without leaving the conversation. Malaysian store owners on WordPress and WooCommerce keep asking the same two questions. Can my products appear in ChatGPT? And can my customers check out inside the chat? The answers, as of September 2026, are yes and not yet, and the gap between them is exactly where a WooCommerce store should be working right now.
ChatGPT Shopping: what the feature actually is
ChatGPT Shopping turned the assistant into a product-discovery surface. Ask ChatGPT for a recommendation (“best wireless earbuds under RM300”, “where to buy standing desk in Malaysia”) and products appear inside the answer with images, prices and seller links. OpenAI states these results are ranked by relevance, not paid placement, and that using Instant Checkout does not buy better ranking.
The buying half is Instant Checkout, built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) that OpenAI co-developed with Stripe and announced in September 2025. When it works, the customer completes the purchase inside the chat and never touches the store’s website. Two limits matter: it launched for US users only, and it supports single-item purchases. Multi-item carts remain a planned addition.
The detail most coverage skips: OpenAI is not the merchant of record. The store still runs payment processing, shipping, returns, refunds and customer support. ChatGPT is the interface. If something goes wrong with an order, the customer is yours to serve.
Where WooCommerce stands: apply, don’t wait
Shopify and Etsy merchants were auto-enrolled when shopping launched. WooCommerce has no such pipe. A WooCommerce store joins by applying at chatgpt.com/merchants with a product feed for review. There is no native ACP integration in WooCommerce core yet.
The WooCommerce team is building toward it. Their October 2025 roadmap describes WooCommerce MCP (shipped in WooCommerce 10.3) for AI assistants to query stores, describes ACP-via-Stripe as a natural fit, and points to product feeds built on the existing Google/Meta/TikTok feed infrastructure. That is a roadmap, not a shipping feature, and it carries no firm date.
Third-party bridge plugins exist on WordPress.org, promising ACP endpoints and Instant Checkout for WooCommerce. They are new, thinly reviewed and handle payments. This desk would not put one on a revenue-critical store without a staging test and a payment-failure drill. The application route through chatgpt.com/merchants is the conservative path, and it is open today.

The catch for Malaysian stores, stated plainly
Instant Checkout is a US-user feature. A Malaysian shopper cannot complete a purchase inside ChatGPT today, and a Malaysian store cannot expect in-chat transactions from its home market. Any article promising otherwise is selling something.
What Malaysian stores DO get now is discovery. ChatGPT’s shopping results pull from product feeds and indexed product pages regardless of where the buyer is, and a shopper in Kuala Lumpur asking ChatGPT for buying advice can absolutely land on your product page. The transaction then completes on your storefront, under your checkout, with your payment gateway, exactly as today.
| Capability | US stores (approved) | Malaysian WooCommerce store today |
|---|---|---|
| Products appear in ChatGPT shopping results | Yes, via feed | Yes, via feed and crawlable product pages |
| Buy inside the chat (Instant Checkout) | Single-item, approved merchants | No, US users only |
| Where the transaction completes | In chat | On your own storefront |
| Ranking model | Relevance: price, availability, quality signals. No paid placement. | |
Feed readiness: the work that survives every pivot
Here is the part worth internalising. The checkout model has already pivoted once: reported industry coverage describes native Instant Checkout narrowing to a small pool of large integrated retailers around March 2026, while the protocol and the discovery layer kept expanding. Buy-buttons change. Structured product data does not go out of style.
The four things that make a WooCommerce store readable by AI shopping surfaces:
- Complete JSON-LD Product schema on every product page: price, currency, availability, GTIN where you have it, brand, images, reviews. WooCommerce’s structured-data output is a starting point, not a finish line. Audit what actually renders.
- A current product feed. If you already sync to Google Merchant Center, you hold most of the asset. Stale prices and phantom stock hurt AI answers the same way they hurt Google Shopping.
- Crawler access. Check robots rules for OAI-SearchBot and friends. A store that blocks AI crawlers is invisible to the channel, full stop.
- Factual, attribute-dense descriptions. AI agents compare specifications, not adjectives. “600-thread-count long-staple cotton, machine washable” beats “luxuriously soft premium fabric” in every machine-mediated comparison.

What to do this month, in order
- Apply at chatgpt.com/merchants. Approval queues move slowly; getting in line is free.
- Audit one product page end to end: what schema renders, what the feed carries, what an AI crawler sees.
- Fix crawl rules for AI shopping agents.
- Rebuild your five best-selling product descriptions as specification-first copy.
- Re-check your Google Merchant Center feed; it is the same data layer.

The bottom line
ChatGPT Shopping is real, organic and worth preparing for. Instant Checkout is real and not for Malaysia yet. The stores that win when the buy button reaches this region will be the ones whose product data was already machine-perfect. None of that preparation expires.
